Between the Folds: a new challenge + inspiration ahead
There’s something about September that feels like the beginning of the end of the year. That little voice saying, “Welp, better figure out what you want to achieve—time’s running out.”
For me, that feeling is especially strong right now. Almost a year ago, I was laid off, and chose to launch Remnants. Honestly, it’s been one of the best things I’ve ever done. But as I reach both that milestone and the close of another calendar year, I feel like there’s still more to create, more to reach for.
This past weekend, I stole away to the beach with an out-of-town friend... a little time to recharge and reflect. When I asked the community what I should draw, you said “draw what you see.” But I couldn’t help also sketching a vision board for the rest of the year: growth over rocky terrain, more time with crafts, more time in my yard with my dogs, and travel with my husband. A year ago, I couldn’t have imagined how much creative time I’d carve out, and now I’m craving more.
Which brings me to this month’s challenge: ✨Between the Folds. Just like the folds in fabric or paper, life has hidden layers and surprises. Sometimes you find them by accident—like a curtain falling down and letting in more light. Other times, you have to crease, tuck, and unfold to see what’s waiting inside. This challenge is an invitation to play with depth, structure, and discovery—in our projects, and maybe in our lives, too.
Let’s get into it →
💡Project Inspiration: Folded Fabric Art
Take a peek at these genius fabric origami pieces. One transforms folded fabric into a quilted cushion cover, while the other is a delicate origami ornament made from fabric.
With just a few folds, and whatever scraps you have on hand, you can turn tiny pieces of cloth into layered, dimensional art. Perfect for diving into the Between the Folds theme with nothing more than fabric and a bit of imagination.

Discovering Heirloom Doll Making: A Forgotten Craft with a Heartbeat
Six months ago, I'd never heard of heirloom dollmaking.
But then one April morning, while half-awake and scrolling Facebook Marketplace, I saw a peculiar listing: “10 bins of doll-making supplies — $100.” No photos, no descriptions. Just a single line and a price. I don’t know why, but something in me said, go. I messaged the seller, hopped in my car, and drove an hour, dreaming of what I might find inside.
As I look toward the rest of the year, I’m reminded that growth and creativity often happen in layers, sometimes hidden until you take the time to unfold them. Here’s to discovering what’s waiting for each of us between the folds.
