September Project: Fall Themed Upcycles

Fall is creeping up regardless of how ready we are with our fall decorations, but this month we’re here to help you prepare for the changing of the seasons: You voted, and chose fall themed upcycles for our September project!

This exciting seasonal prompt caused me a bit of reflection. As a now decade-long dweller of Los Angeles, my Minnesotan origin instincts to add a sepia tone to my home — the perfect backdrop for cozy fall evenings in! — has long since dissipated. Have I become numb to the changing of the seasons?

Surely no matter how much my life resembles year-round-summer, autumn scents during a fall transition are a must. Leaves fall from trees wherever you are (and leaves make great decor). And frankly, if my home decor is changing with seasons, it absolutely must be reused. So with that, I’m super excited to dig in with you this month and explore ways to fill our homes with fall scents, fallen leaves, and discarded fall treasures. In this together. -Molly

How to preserve leaves using a variety of methods

Bringing nature into our homes is a perfect way to use what’s available to us. To get your gears turning, we wanted to share ways to preserve leaves and other natural materials. In this video below, Red Ted Art explores what different leaf preservation methods look like (including how to preserve leaves using a Glycerin Bath). Compare laminating, pressing of leaves, glycerin bath and coating in PVA glue.

Two words: Lanceleaf Coreopsis

Take inspiration from @thedogwooddyer who turned this basic white button-down shirt into a late summer wardrobe dream with a simple eco dye technique and a handful of lanceleaf coreopsis. Curious to try your own eco-printing? She offers a free tutorial on her website here.

A natural dye must-have guide

If you’re thinking about getting into natural dyes this fall, this handy guide by redditor mistercobain is a must. mistercobain used small batches of materials and soaked blotting paper to get each swatch. This particular seasonal chart, was made July and August. What fall blooms’ colors would you want to see?

Bend Spoons Not Truths

by Gabriela Chagas

In this piece, Gabriela explores the beauty of transformation, and finding value in what once was — just like a spoon becoming a cherished ring. “Seeing an object that once was another gives us a sense of respect for the medium. That’s why, the upcycled projects I find the most beautiful are the ones where you can clearly identify the material used. “

We dug in and found Catherine’s work is absolutely 😍. Can you believe these are plastic bags? Check it out below, and welcome Catherine to the community.
